No Gods, No Masters: A History of Anarchism

Anarchism is a political philosophy that fell out of favour in the early twentieth century.  This, I believe, is partly due to the advocates of anarchism who decided that violence was needed to destabilise the existing ruling class, in the hope that from chaos order would emerge. There is perhaps more evidence for this in the historical record than most people realise, but such periods of chaos usually involve much suffering for many people. Regardless, the wave of assassinations by anarchists in the early part of the twentieth century neither destabilised the government, nor drew people to anarchism; indeed, just the opposite. The punks were drawn to this violent, anti-authoritarian strain of anarchism, and added a strain of nihilism to it, which also didn't help with anarchism's image.

In reclaiming anarchism as, I strongly believe, the personal and political philosophy that is needed for advancing human civilisation, a good place to start is in learning its history.  This documentary series is a great place to start.
