To convert Cat's tourist visa to a permanent resident one, we had to do two things.  Pledge to get married, and then leave the country during the changeover between the two.  

Cat calculated all the countries that were close to Australia so she didn't have to fly too far (carbon and all that) and ended up deciding on Vanuatu.  When I heard this, I decided to use some of my flying carbon budget (I allow myself every year or two a return trip) and off we went.

What an amazingly beautiful country, so complex, so green.  We really loved it there.

When I got back to work, one of the guys in my team Kit told me his step-to-be-grandparents had been murdered there a couple of years ago. I mentioned that might have been useful information before I went, but he said he didn't want to worry me :)
