To convert Cathy's tourist visa to a permanent resident one, we had to do two things.  Pledge to get married, and then leave the country during the changeover between the two.  

Cathy calculated all the countries that were close to Australia so she didn't have to fly too far (carbon and all that) and ended up deciding on Vanuatu.  When I heard this, I decided to use some of my flying carbon budget (I allow myself every year or two a return trip) and off we went.

What an amazingly beautiful country, so complex, so green.  We really loved it there.

When I got back to work, one of the guys in my team told me his step-grandparents had been murdered there a couple of years ago.
