The team of Technical Solutions Engineers I was part of, were mostly 30 something IT guys far away from their homes.  We bonded really well, and often had a drink, played poker, and did things like this together.  Google made it easy to form close relationships with your workmates because you have breakfast, lunch and dinner with them, you have offsite events with them, and you travel away with them multiple times a year.

I've found in my working life, it doesn't matter so much what I do, the pressure I'm under or what the management does, if you work with people you like and respect, it's a good place to work.  Google to me was all about people like these guys, and they made it a great place to work.
