Simon and I sat down for two sessions of recorded discussion, which led to the first released podcast. That episode, entirely from our second session, was mostly about veganism but also talked about technology, AI and a few other issues. There was a lot we talked about, however, that was left on the cutting room floor.
This new episode is from our conversation on the first day. We talk here about the basics of morality. You will note I am very much an amateur philosopher, but hopefully I make up for that with some passion and an effort to make it relevant to the world we live in. I think one of the urgent goals of materialist/atheist philosophy is to rescue the discussion of morality and meaning from religion and ground it back in the evolutionary system from which it emerges. This to me is the intellectual foundation from which we create the future.
While not as accessible as the first podcast (if you don't read much philosophy, you might miss some of the references that I use without properly explaining them), I think there is something in this for most people if they get through it. Not so much in agreeing with Simon or me, but in seeing that we are talking here about something deep and important, that needs to escape the domain of professional philosophy.
Again, an honour to be on the Don't Panic Yet Podcast.
