Adam Curtis is one of my favourite documentary film makers.  I think the thesis at the centre of The Century of the Self is amongst the most important confronting modern societies - Has our ever-increasing understanding of human psychology been used to liberate or enslave us?

Curtis makes you do the work, however.  He can be too quick to follow a just-so story.  If Edward Bernays says he was the person who convinced women to smoke, should we believe them?  Still, this is an amazing documentary series (all four together here).
